History of the School:

Suncoast Tang Soo Do was started at its current location in 2007 by Mrs. Carole Yoder. In 2013, the studio changed ownership to Mr. Lampasona and Mr. Orlando. The focus of Suncoast Tang Soo Do (SCTSD) is to increase the exposure of our art through participation in community events in the New Port Richey and Trinity areas of West Central Florida. Over the last 2 years, the studio has participated in many local events such Taste of Trinity, Chasco Fiesta, Rockus Maximus and New Port Richey Spring Fling. This summer, SCTSD is providing introductory karate lessons at the Word of Life Youth Bible Camp in Hudson, FL. We are commited to spreading our wonderful martial art, serving our West Central FL community and growing our school.

History of the Chief Instructor:
Mr. Victor Lampasona first became interested in martial arts training 1972, while attending St. Johns University in NY, when he became a member of the Tae Kwon Do karate team. After graduating from St. Johns in 1977, he left formal martial art training to pursue graduate education. In 1996, he joined the WTSDA and began training in Tang Soo Do at ‘Karate World’ in Atlanta, GA under the direction of Master J. John St. James and Master Charles Richards. He was awarded the Cho Dan rank in 1999, the E Dan rank in 2001 and became a certified instructor. In 2003, Mr. Lampasona moved to the Tampa Bay area where he continued his training in Tang Soo Do at Philips Karate Academy and finally SCTSD, where he was the senior rank instructor. He was awarded the Sam Dan rank in 2011. In May 2013, Mr. Lampasona and Mr. Jerry Orlando assumed ownership of SCTSD and Mr. Lampasona became chief instructor.

History of the Co-Owner:

Mr. Jerry Orlando, began his training in Tang Soo Do in 1981 while stationed at McGuire Airforce Base in New Jersey under the direction of Master Vance Britt. Mr. Orlando achieved the rank of 3rd Gup. His military commitments drew him away from Tang Soo Do until 2009 when Mr. Orlando began training again at Suncoast Tang Soo Do. He was awarded the rank of Cho Dan in 2011and became a certified instructor. Then he earned the rank of E Dan in 2013. He is also a certified C.O.B.R.A Self Defense Instructor.

What makes your studio stand out from the rest:

Our studio stands out amongst martial art studios in our area in a number of ways:
1. Our training atmosphere - Instructors create a positive, but accountable, environment for students to learn the technical aspects of traditional Tang Soo Do. We have a family-oriented atmosphere that is created by our instructors, and supported by our students and their parents. Our studio is blessed to have parents who are involved in all of the studio activities. Our positive family-oriented atmosphere is felt by all who visit our dojang.
2. Our mission - SCTSD focuses on teaching traditional Tang Soo Do, practical Self-Defense and Life Skills. In support of these goals, we celebrate student’s achievements both in and out of the dojang. Students receive academic achievement awards during the school year. We also offer C.O.B.R.A. self-defense training for non-martial arts individuals. Students receive a life lesson at every class and learn the true purpose of training is both physical and mental improvement.
3. The WTSDA – The camaraderie, fellowship and brotherhood shared by members of the WTSDA is very evident in our studio. Students develop friendships that transcend years by participating in Region and World events. Many students and parents speak fondly of the many friendships they have made through our Association.

Student Testimonials:

"Before I started Tang Soo Do I was going the wrong way in my life with nothing to stop me. After an altercation I decided to take martial arts, and the only reason I took TSD was because it fit my schedule. Since I joined back in 2006 I have become a different person from the inside out by following the codes and tenets by using them in my everyday life, along with the training. I enjoy every class and have become an instructor in the process, it is an honor to give back to my fellow students that which was given to me. I hope that I can change their life in the way it changed mine."
~ Rusty Camacho – 45 y, E Dan #43775

"I have been training at Suncoast Tang Soo Do with my son, Allan, and daughter, Brooke, for 3 years. It has provided us with the opportunity to study Tang Soo Do in a supportive and encouraging environment, with instructors and fellow students that have come to feel like family. There are many aspects of Tang Soo Do that I feel have helped each of us to grow personally and, as a family. What I find most beneficial is that all the things we learn in the studio can be carried out into our everyday lives. It's not uncommon to find us bringing up a code or tenet at the dinner table when we're talking about things that may have happened at school or at work. It has been challenging, but well worth it. We are very glad that we found such a great school to become a part of. Tang Soo!"
~ Kenneth Thieme 3rd Gup

“Tang Soo Do has really helped me bloom as a person in more ways than I realized were possible. I used to be very shy and withdrawn with no confidence in myself; I struggled with anxiety disorder and heart disease for as long as I can remember. Tang Soo Do made me able to not be restricted by my physical and mental limitations, while becoming a much healthier and happier individual. This wonderful art really does become a lifestyle, I owe it a lot!”
~ Ashley Hutchinson, 22, 1st gup

“I joined Suncoast Tang Soo Do four years ago at age 56, to get in better shape and engage in a group physical activity that I knew would be both healthy and challenging (I had practiced Tang Soo Do as a teen many years ago). Training here has been a wonderful experience and provided so much more than I expected. Our studio has excellent dedicated instructors, and we have members of all ages, with many families training together. As a more senior student than most I have been seriously challenged physically and mentally at times as I transitioned through the color belt ranks, but was still able to make steady progress. I enjoy being part of the leadership team, encouraging others, and seeing students of all ages develop not only in their skills, but in their maturity and character. Some of the special features of our studio are the dedication of the instructors and high standards we strive to achieve, the emphasis on personal development and the application of the codes and tenets in our daily lives, the advanced training classes which offer additional weapons and self-defense training, and the special activities like karate camps and parties that are so much fun. Attending all of the Regional and World Championships has also been terrific and I have made many new friends. I’m grateful for our instructors who make this way of life possible, and for the warmth and support of fellow students and their families. It’s truly an honor to be a member of this studio and the WTSDA.”
