History of the School:

In the summer of 2010 Master Kelly Goodwin offered Sah Bum Nim Miguel A. Soto the opportunity to take over the Coastal Canyon Tang Soo Do location at Mission Bay Montessori Academy since she had a second location and it was becoming more difficult to manage both locations with her insanely busy life as a PhD. She offered him the chance to keep it as a satellite school or if he wanted to rename the school and start his own club. Immediately SBN Soto took the chance to start his own location since that was something he has dreamed about for many years, thus the birth of M.A.S. Tang Soo Do. Thanks to Master Goodwin who helped SBN Soto with the initial paperwork to make the transition smoothly. He was able to continue classes without a hiccup. After the first year he was able to increase the number of students to over 25 which was where the average would stay up to the present time. Later on SBN Soto was able to transition from a Club status to a Studio status within the World Tang Soo Do Association.

In the beginning of 2014 Master Patrick Marsch offered SBN Soto the opportunity to take over his UC-Tech location at the University of California, San Diego which has been running for over 30 years. This was an enormous honor for SBN Soto since he would be able to continue an outstanding legacy that Master Marsch has created in hopes to do the same. When the transfer was complete, UC-Tech Tang Soo Do turned into M.A.S. Tang Soo Do – UCSD. Within the 1st year of SBN Soto taking over the location he was able to more than triple the amount of enrolled students at this location. When the transfer was complete with the World Tang Soo Do Association SBN Soto became the 1st instructor within Region 20 to have two accredited studios within the association.
Currently SBN Soto is working with his staff to open up a 3rd studio in the Pacific Beach area which would be its 1st commercial location. This would create a dynamic triangle of M.A.S. Tang Soo Do on the beautiful San Diego Coastline.

History of the Chief Instructor:

Sah Bum Nim Miguel A. Soto is currently a Sah Dan who began training in the World Tang Soo Do Association in 1993 at the age of 7. He began his training with Master Larry Dercole at the Tang Soo Do Karate Institute until he was a green

belt. He continued his training with Master Kenny Purnell at the Allied Gardens Tang Soo Do Karate Academy for 15 years where he owes a huge part of what made him a great Martial Artist/Instructor. He received the rank of Cho Dan in 1998, E Dan in 2000, Sam Dan in 2004, and Sah Dan in 2014. He also tested for the rank of Sah Dan Master in 2015. During the time when he was able to compete at tournaments he was fortunate to have won the titles of WTSDA Region 1 Male Jr. Black Belt Grand Champion & the WTSDA Region 20 Male Grand Championship Cup (3 Times). In 2004 he became an assistant instructor with Master Patrick Marsch at UC-Tech Tang Soo Do where he learned a different style of teaching adults. In 2008 he also became an assistant instructor for Master Kelly Goodwin at the Coastal Canyon Tang Soo Do location where he learned teaching techniques for Tiny Tigers & Little Dragon classes.
He currently is teaching 5 days a week at both of his locations where he is an active and integral part of every single class. He is sweating right beside his students and loving every moment of it.
One of the best moments was when his son Santiago A. Soto started training with him. It was just simply amazing to have his son in class where they would be able to train side by side and continue their amazing bond together. SBN Miguel A. Soto wants to give a huge THANK YOU to his Amazing wife Marlene J. Diaz-Soto who has been a huge support factor for him and for all of the time she sacrifices while SBN Soto is teaching and/or at WTSDA events.

What makes your studio stand out from the rest:

M.A.S. Tang Soo Do has devoted itself to the growth of each student- not just in the martial arts but in every aspect of their lives. SBN Soto shares his passion in EVERY class. Whether Tiny Tiger or Dan, each student is expected to give their all when they train. Students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone and seek constant improvement. At M.A.S. Tang Soo Do we are dedicated to shaping the World Tang Soo Do Association's next generation of instructors by challenging our students both mentally and physically. We believe in knowing and honoring our past as we evolve into the future.

“Didn't know what we were missing until we got to M.A.S. They say ignorance is bliss, but that doesn't make a good martial artist. We had no idea what we were missing until we got to M.A.S. Tang Soo Do. Training is tough, realistic, thorough, and most of all, fun. Mr. Soto takes pride in teaching his students, and his students take pride in their abilities. We couldn't ask for a more dedicated teacher and mentor.”
~Dave Vassall, Father of Colin Vassall 2nd Gup Red Belt

“My son has been in the Tang Soo Do program with Mr. Soto for 5+ years. In this program my son has gained strength, confidence and respect for himself and others. Mr. Soto is always caring and amazing with the kids. I love his teaching style and abilities, the kids love and respect him. The experience at M.A.S. Tang Soo Do has been fantastic!!! I encourage anyone interested in martial arts to check out M.A.S. Tang Soo Do. The community they build is positive and encouraging at all times, and it's a great activity.”
~Antonieta Camacho, Mother of Daniel Conzemius 5th Gup Green Belt

“We brought our children to M.A.S Tang Soo Do when our children's previous studio decided to go in a different direction. M.A.S. made them feel welcome and immediately focused on their needs. They have grown immensely since joining M.A.S. and we couldn't be more proud of them. Not only are their skills greatly improved but their knowledge, attitude, and confidence is stronger than ever. The intensity, discipline, attention to detail, and insistence on completely understanding what they are learning is unmatched anywhere. We are fortunate to have this jewel in La Jolla.”
~Raymond and Martha Barrera, parents of Laura Barrera E Dan and Diego Barrera Cho Dan
